The division handles matters involving employment discrimination, housing discrimination, public accommodation discrimination, and bias-motivated harassment and intimidation.
The division enforces several key state laws, including the West Virginia Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination in employment and public accommodations based on race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, blindness, or disability. The division also enforces the West Virginia Fair Housing Act, which protects against discrimination in housing and residential real estate transactions, and the Pregnant Workers' Fairness Act, which safeguards employment rights related to pregnancy, childbirth, and related medical conditions.
Under the West Virginia Human Rights Act, the division is authorized to seek court orders protecting individuals who face violence or threats of violence due to race, religion, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, political affiliation, or disability.
