Commitment to Open Government

State laws governing public records and open governmental proceedings form the foundation of transparency in our democratic system. These essential statutes ensure citizens have meaningful access to information about governmental operations and the actions of public officials and employees.

Our office upholds these principles by facilitating access to public information and supporting the requirement that governmental proceedings be conducted in an open and accessible manner.

Understanding Your Rights

These materials explain how the Freedom of Information Act and the Open Meetings or "Sunshine" Law serve to maintain accountability in public service.

FOIA Request Process

The Office of Attorney General maintains a structured approach to handling all requests for information under the West Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). All FOIA requests directed to our office are forwarded to the Attorney General's designated representative, who ensures timely compliance with statutory requirements.
